Late winter will once again have a firm grip on us during the first half of the new week. On Monday, a highly active frontal system will sweep in, accompanied by a strong, gusty northwest wind in the mountains. Under heavy cloud cover, heavy precipitation will develop, particularly in the northwestern mountain regions where the wind is blocked. The snow line will drop steadily below 1,000 meters. By Tuesday, as the wind shifts to the north, the focus of precipitation will shift to the northern leeward slopes of the mountains. It will get even colder, and snow will fall down into the low-lying valleys. The least amount of fresh snow will accumulate around the main Alpine ridge; the focus will once again be on the immediate northern edge of the Alps. The wind will shift to the northeast and remain consistently strong on Wednesday and Thursday. The thicker, partly high-fog-like cloud cover will persist, with sunny breaks remaining rare. At times, there may also be light snowfall. No significant improvement in the weather is yet in sight as we approach Friday and Saturday; only temperatures will now rise steadily. It is not until Easter that the sun is expected to take control of the weather.
